how do I determine the right billing rate as a freelance specialist?
Your rate primarily depends on three factors:
- Specialisation The more unique your expertise is (for example, a combination of a niche technology and deep industry experience), the higher your rate can be.
- Experience Demonstrated success on complex projects, as well as experience with well-known brands in your industry, will increase your rate.
- Project Duration Short, intense assignments are often paid better per hour than long-term contracts, which offer greater stability.
Remember that you must budget for everything that an employee receives: pension contributions, insurance (especially professional indemnity insurance), training/certifications, sick leave/holiday pay, as well as administration costs (bookkeeping, accountant fees). In addition to your salary, your hourly rate must cover these expenses.
-
hwy do danish companies choose to use freelancers over permanently employed specialists?
Companies seek flexibility, specialisation, and speed. They require specific expertise and expert knowledge to quickly execute well-defined projects. A freelancer can start at short notice and provide specialised knowledge that may not be available internally.
Currently, we are seeing particularly high activity in the Pharma/MedTech sector (due to strict documentation and quality requirements), Finance (driven by digitalisation and regulation), and Energy/Infrastructure (driven by the green transition and major construction projects).
-
which freelance consultants are currently most in demand among randstad’s clients?
Demand is highest within three main areas:
- IT & Digitalisation: Including Full-stack Developers, Cloud/DevOps Engineers (especially Azure and AWS), Data Scientists, and IT Project Managers.
- Engineering & Technical Roles (Non-IT): Particularly Senior Mechanical Engineers, Automation & Control Engineers, and Specialised Project Engineers within Green Energy, Pharma, and Infrastructure.
- ERP & Business Systems: Experts in system implementation and optimisation, such as SAP Consultants and Dynamics 365 Specialists.
